Faded Glory

Profile In Patriotism: Shadow Of Abraham Lincoln - Click to view the larger image.

Yesterday, my father and I were poking around in my grandfather's old tool shed (which now belongs to my sister). I spied this old flag, crumpled and tossed into a corner.

I asked my dad about it, and he told me that it had been in the shed since his parents bought the place in the 1940's. He pointed out that it had 35 stars on it.

Printed on very cheap fabric, everyone assumed that it had been some kind of sales gimmick. Me? I'm thinking, "That flag is older than me, at least. Therefore, an antique."

I took a few photos and we put the flag back where we had found it. Back at home, I googled "35 star American flag". I learned that this flag was only used from 1863-1865; Civil War era.

Chances are, this is a cheap reproduction, manufactured much later -- but still very old.

This morning, as I began editing the shots from yesterday, I got the most eerie feeling ......
isn't that shadow left of the stars, Mr. Lincoln's profile?

10 June

No matter how bleak my mood, a drive through Secret Pass and Ruby Valley is sure to lift my spirits. Today was no different. Wildflowers have overflowed the passes in great sweeps of yellow, purple, and red. On the valley floor, oceans of deep blue larkspur flood the senses. I wanted to spend more time in the magical valley, thinking that maybe the wind would slow long enough for a better rendering.

That did not happen, and I hope to return soon -- before the crazy quilt evaporates with summer heat.

Soon after I got home, I went on an errand of delivery. As I approached the Cherry Creek Barrel Saloon, I saw the barmaid and a local neighbor woman outside in the street, talking with a man I did not recognize.

As I got out of my car, he grinned broadly and asked, "Are you Arla?"  He sounded so pleased to meet me!

"I am."

"I have been looking for you!"

"Oh?"

He explained that he is in the business of acquiring old -- VERY OLD - clothing, for costume designers for movies. I told him that I had nothing of true vintage value. My costume collection is just that: costumes. He was quite insistent about having a look at my stuff, and so off we went. He found a hat he liked, and paid me far too much for it.
